If you have a habit of talking about God’s Word to anybody and everybody (like I tend to do) eventually you will hear “Science proves your God and Scripture to be wrong.” Maybe you’ve heard it before even without sharing, just because somebody knows that you’re a Christian. How in the world do you respond to that? They got you, right? No, not really.
The fact of the matter is, science cannot definitively prove or disprove God, because the idea of God is not a testable hypothesis.
We all believe what we want to believe, based on the evidence that has been laid before us. God has provided some substantial evidence in my own life, of His existence, and because of that, I have reason to believe in Him. However, I can’t recreate those experiences for others to be able to believe. So, what I believe is on Faith.
So when it comes to science and God, a 2009 Pew Research Center poll of American scientists found that 51% believed in a higher power, so obviously science does not disprove God. There is plenty of evidence for God in science itself.
Scripture starts out….
Genesis 1:1
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Science shows that the universe had a beginning. Something can’t come from nothing. That in itself points to a creator.
The laws of physics are so precise that it’s hard to deny that somebody created the universe. Considering the strength to of gravity, the mass of particles or the force that holds atoms together if any of them changed by 1 in 10^36th the universe couldn’t support stars, planets or life. It kinda points to the watchmaker theory. If you’re walking in the desert and you come across a watch, do you assume that somebody made it or that the wind blew the sand around for millions of years until eventually, a watch formed? The obvious answer is that it was designed and created.
DNA is another indication that there was some intelligence behind our creation. It is considered by most in the field to be a super-complex code that tells cells how to build and run living things, way more organized than any computers. Scientists propose evolutionary mechanisms to explain it, but the organization involved points to a creator.
Obviously, these aren’t proofs, but as we consider all of these things, it almost takes a willful denial of God to not see His hand in all of this. And that is exactly how God sees it.
Romans 1:18-20
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
In all reality science is not anti-God, but science is understood based on certain premises. It doesn’t matter if you are the most righteous, Bible toting Christian, or an Atheist, you understand things based on your worldview, and you will put that worldview into your understanding of the evidence. As a Christian you will likely put a Christian bias into your interpretation of experimental results, as an Atheist, you will be sure not to see any evidence of God. As a result, we get conflicting evidence at times.
The real struggle today really boils down to evolution. How did humanity come into existence? Modern science claims that they have extensive evidence supporting evolution, but there are big name scientists who push back, believing a young earth creations theory. People like the late Henry Morris who co-authored “The Genesis Flood” started the modern flood geology and YEC and founded the Institute for Creation Research (ICR), Ken Ham, who has created the Answers in Genesis organization, the Creation Museum, and the Ark encounter. Other scientists in the field would be Duane Gish, Andrew Snelling, Tas Walker, and many others, giving evidence that not all scientists agree on everything.
While I tend to personally be in the camp of the above-mentioned scientists, there is also a camp of Theistic Evolutionists, who believe that both are true, and that the days in Genesis 1-2 are not literal 24-hour days, but rather periods of time that God used to create the earth.
The reality is, none of us were there when it was all created, so we don’t know for sure. All that we can do is go off of the evidence that is presented. To me part of that evidence is God’s Word. While the Bible itself was never intended to be a science text book, there are passages that point to things that modern science has found to be true.
Ancient myths claimed that the earth rested on animal, pillars, or a turtle, while Scripture said
Job 26:7
7 He stretches out the north over the void
and hangs the earth on nothing.
It was discovered in the 1600’s that blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to the body and that it is essential for life, basically without proper blood flow we would die. It’s interesting that God had said way back in…
Leviticus 17:11
11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood,
That’s not to mention how the combination of Isaiah 40:22, Proverbs 8:27 and Job 26:10 point to a sphere rather than a flat circle. While these verses are poetic in nature, they still point to what scientists discovered later in time.
I could keep going, but I think you get the point, but I do want mention one more, being as I found it interesting. In 1839 an oceanographer named Matthew Maury was hurt. While recovering in bed his daughter read to him from
Psalms 8:8
and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
he pondered that statement over and over and eventually used that information to map the real ocean currents increasing sea travel speeds dramatically.
I will be the first to admit that I have a bias in my understanding of science, because I have seen God work in my life, and know Him to be real, but to believe that an Atheist has no bias in their understanding, would be foolish. While none of this proves the truth of Scripture, I would think that there is enough evidence there to make a skeptic consider the possibility of it.
Thank you for reading this, as always, I would encourage you to spend time in His Word, in prayer and in the fellowship of other believers. And if you haven’t visited already, I would encourage you to come visit our little church on the hill, it’s worth the drive.
